Try Something New for Climb Up the 50: Adventure Racing

I’m excited about the upcoming Climb Up the 50 even, but frankly I had no idea of what type of challenge I want to undertake. Truth be told, I’m not in the best shape and I’m using the event as a training goal in my new exercise regimen. Get in shape and help some kids who need it? What’s not to like?

Well boring, pavement pounding, weight training, stuffy gyms and general boredom to name a few. But after doing a bit of research, I found the antidote to these stale activities: Adventure Racing (sounds exotic, eh?)

What is Adventure Racing?

To make it short and sweet, adventure racing is a number of different activities combined into one race. Typically races can include activities like trail running, orienteering, paddling, mountain biking and climbing.

Do It Individually or With Friends

One of my favorite parts about adventure racing is that it can be done with friends. Hey, I’m a gregarious person and pursuing an activity that offers the ability to see friends and make new ones is right up my alley. Plus your friends are your support system; if you’re like me sometimes you need that extra motivation not only during training but also during the race, so you’re friends will be there to pick you up.

It Doesn’t Have to be the Ironman

My first impressions of an adventure race gave me visions of collapsing on the street, but I’m not going to enter the Ironman Triathlon. While these races have been traditionally seen as rugged, extreme races for the ultra fit, adventure races now come in all lengths and variations from five hours to a weekend and upwards making them accessible for any level of fitness or ability.

Have Some Fun & Help Some Kids

Running an adventure race looks like it will be a lot of fun and the fact that it can help children that need it is just that much better. The best way to start is by first registering for a race in which you have interest. If you’re not sure where to look, check out Active.com. Second, register for Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up. Third, start training for your race. We’ll contact you to offer advice on how to recruit family, friends & co-workers to sponsor you. Finally, have fun.

Personally, I think that I’ve already looped my cousin into doing a race with me and I’m working on a couple of friends. Once I determine which race it will be, I’ll let you know and maybe you can join in ;)
