Meeting the AFCA Board of Directors

Last week I had the opportunity to meet AFCA’s Board of Directors and I was impressed. Since starting as a volunteer with Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up about a year ago, I haven’t had the opportunity to meet anyone in person, but that changed last Friday. During the semiannual board meeting, I had the pleasure of meeting an intelligent group of people, committed to helping others.

I’m not going to say that I was surprised at what I found, but with my contact limited to email and telephone calls I was curious to meet the disembodied voice on the other end of the phone. Now that I think about it, it was like meeting “Charlie” from 1970’s TV Show Charlie’s Angels.

By the time I arrived late in the afternoon, it was clear that the entire group had been hard at work all day. Sequestered in a meeting room, everyone was glassy-eyed with a nearby easel covered with notes testifying to their day-long effort. Thankfully as soon as the Climb Up event became the subject of discussion, energy pulsed back into the group. It could’ve been the coffee, but I think everyone is excited about Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up.

As the day wound down, everyone took the opportunity to reacquaint themselves over a meal at a local home. Board members, Directors and volunteers all had interesting stories about their experiences abroad. Although my favorite stories were those of cultural “faux pas” and “unique” foods found in far-away lands, the consistent theme throughout all the stories was that of helping others. I was really encouraged to learn that Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up is lead by such knowledgeable people with a commitment to helping others.
